Eh, GNU Taler does enable income transparency (income = business) while enabling privacy for private (personal) expenses. So the only thing absurd here is for the article to call this a research priority, given that since Chaum (1983) solutions that do this exist.

Income transparency means losing privacy. Just because an income tax law was passed, doesn't mean that being forced to disclose one's income is no longer surrendering one's privacy.

Moreover, the article cites the crime-mitigation effects of transparency, which requires invading more than just privacy of income.
