Ask HN: What laptop should I buy in 2022?
3 points by pbrw 1539 days ago
Hello!

I'm looking for a new laptop solely for coding purposes. I don't need any fancy features like fingerprint scanner or touchscreen. It has to be fast, reliable and serve me for a long time, repairability appreciated. I will use Linux only. I primarily do full stack web projects with Rust, TS and some low-level programming with C++.

I will consider every option below 2000$

I will be thankful for any suggestions!

Has the Framework turned out to be a good option? Components might be slightly dated by now. I wonder when they will update. Though you can always update it yourself as needed.
What’s your budget?

Well the Dell XPS developer editions are nice if you can find them.

System76 makes bespoke Linux laptops, they could be an option.

I’m in the same boat: I’m looking for a laptop to replace my 2013 MacBook Pro and I’ve switched to Linux on it. So I’m hoping more folks reply.

Reddit would probably be a better place to so this though on something like r/Linux.

I agree with this answer – the Dell XPS machines are beasts and you might eventually even find yourself caring for the "fancy things", e.g. a touch screen.

To add to this list, I still think that Lenovo makes great and very customizable Thinkpads. As far as I know, the P15 is one of the popular ones. It's a chungus though, so if you need something lighter, the X1 Carbon is a great choice as well as it's very compact and portable.
