Ask HN: how to start making "real world" objects?

Hi, I have some ideas for gizmos that I would like to make, but no idea where to start. For example, machining metal, or molding plastic... the properties of different types of plastics... all the problems that come along with working with those pesky atoms. I'm sure some of the forum members are wicked garage tinkerers -- how did you get started? |
