SourceTree is a desktop client for DVCSs in general, not a webapp, so I'm not sure of the comparison. It's a pretty sweet piece of kit regardless.

I think the idea is to compete with GitHub for Mac. As Tom Preston Werner mentioned a few weeks ago in why the company is putting so much emphasis on the Mac client, the idea is to go after a much wider user base than people who are able to use the command line. So that designers can use Git, for example.
