I have a friend who had the exact same circumstances you describe. He decided to go to the local state school which gave him a full scholarship. Graduated with zero debt and now has a successful career as an electrical engineer working at a Silicon Valley startup. He told me everything he needed to know to do his job well, he learned from his dad (electronics, UNIX, C, etc.).
