Yining Karl Li has mentioned in previous posts their intention to write a blog post about modern lens optics, which should outline multiple things.

Hopefully, a general overview of the 100s of lenses they've found/made the models for, alongside how modern optics fail to be accurately modeled by the polynomial model of optics...

Polynomial models are generally usable for most applications. If you need lots of accuracy, such as for long-range stereo, they sorta work only for traditional and non-wide lenses.
