What I'd really love to see is a way to find candidates via their former employers. As a CTO who recruits in a specific industry, I need to find employees who used to work at companies A, B, C.

sidebar - if your hiring criteria demands people who've worked at A,B,C companies before (either one, multiple, or all) ... you're artificially limiting yourself to a tiny portion of the potential candidate pool
Doesn't LinkedIn search more-or-less accomplish this? Look for people who have worked for J, Q, and U companies?
This is very industry dependent. Some industries make heavy use of LinkedIn, but others never touch it.

For example, if they need educators, LI is pretty useless.

Not very well.... even when you pay for their recruiter packages.
maybe I haven't looked hard enough, but I find it to be pretty difficult to search by that dimension
