I am shocked "8x8 Meet" hasn't been sued by Google yet.

The only issued trademark is for "google meet". They have filed for 'meet' in 2021 but they cant retroactively enforce that against 8x8 who have been using it since mid 2020
OT: is there a shadow economy of squatting common words as trademarks, like with domain names? It's surprising and slightly terrifying this is even possible.
Nope, not possible. You cannot enforce a trademark without using it commercially.
