It's really common for educated non-native speakers to spell better than native speakers. Because non-natives learn the language already with a written support, so they have worse pronunciation but better spelling compared to people who learn the language exclusively orally as kids.

My partner is a native speaker and I'm not, yet he often asks me how to spell.
