This is true! A leave of absence and a break could help a lot to reset their headspace. Some companies offer a mental health leave with documentation from a psychologist and it remains confidential.

I also think OP could use some change at work so that they're not coming back to the same intense workload or routine that is boring them. Maybe the things they used to be excited about aren't the same anywhere and changing up responsibilities or projects might help.
