When I joined the Mesa team at Intel in 2012, Mesa had just gained support for OpenGL 3.0, many years behind the latest. Only a few companies (Intel, VMware, Red Hat) contributed to Mesa in significant ways. Proprietary drivers were still the norm and even Intel pushed to drop Mesa. The massive changes since then that have taken place around Mesa have been incredible to watch and to play a small part in. Mesa is now absolutely the best choice for companies and it's apparent from all of the contributors we've gained. In addition to Intel, VMware, and Red Hat, we now regularly see substantial contributions from AMD, Google, Igalia (contracting for multiple companies, notably Broadcom), Microsoft, Valve, and Collabora (contracting for multiple companies, notably Valve). Seeing articles about Mesa in mainstream publications like PCGamer would have been unthinkable for me when I started contributing in 2012. Today, it's only a little surprising :) Oh, and just because it's a critical component to RADV's success, here's a very recent article about NIR, the intermediate representation used in Mesa's optimizing shader compiler: https://www.jlekstrand.net/jason/blog/2022/01/in-defense-of-... |
