Great article! Though perhaps one of the things downplayed is how often food is an expression of love. Most frequently, the love of the person making it for the one eating it. But, also the love of sharing a family or cultural recipe with a wider audience and passing that love on to strangers, who may in turn pass it on. My memories of happy times and happy places are often linked to food. The first time I had a courgette (my Italian friend making a simple recipe from his village), the taste of popping candy as a kid, my mum's roast dinner, and eating Nasi Goreng in Malaysia and giant garlic prawns in Lombok on my honeymoon! In my family - food has always been a way to show your love. |
