Ask HN: Political Twitter account using my name/job search
1 points by makersmasher 1610 days ago
I am getting my resume together, about to start the job hunt for a security/red team role.

When I google my name, there is a twitter account that is my @lastnamefirstname (farily unique name); it has some pretty racist/right wing garbage posted.

I went through twitters' official "impersonation" channel (even though it's not really impersonating me), but they declined to take action.

Is this a liability in my job hunt? Is there a tactful way to say "Hey, if you google me, Im not this guy on twitter"?

I created a twitter account to have on my resume to "supersede" the one I don't control in the hopes that hiring managers would give the benefit of the doubt, but is there any other action I can take?

What you are talking about is a "Reputation doppelgänger". I could retype the advice found in this article but probably best to just share the link ;)

Did you examine Twitter rules on "hateful conduct"? [1] If some tweets break the rules just report them, hopefully Twitter will remove them or suspend the whole account.

Thanks, reported it.
