In the early 90s, Kodak created a ground breaking system which allowed for 2k/4k scanning/compositing and recording back to motion picture film. The recorder (Kodak Lightning) used lasers to expose the image on the film. This was the foundation for Digital Intermediate. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cineon I can't imagine how expensive the R&D must have been on it. |
