I think in many (not all) people, burnout happens because you are not in control of what you do. If you can't adjust course when stress is at the manageable stage, eventually it will become unmanageable.

Yep. From what I have seen people are more okay with doing things when they have agency. There is a big amount of difference between someone telling you to do something vs you choosing to do something.
