The assumption here is that the entire world uses western naming conventions, there are many cultures where people are given one or five names or whatever number, and western society (or our idea of what a name is) is forcing them to conform. These are not always 'arbitrary naming whims'. |

And yet somehow those aren't the people we see complaining (and I'm speaking as someone whose name currently gets mangled because I have the "wrong" number of names).
