Excellent detailed advice by the others in this thread. Let me add what I think you can bring to the table: a track record in getting things done. The only thing a professor has less of than money is time. If you can convince a PI that you can implement stuff more reliably than ‘mere’ students, without having to be held by the hand all the time, that’s a winner. |
