The only constant I've seen in 20 years is terrible documentation, which highlights the most common mistake all engineers make: we hyperfocus on the how, and forget to consider the why.

Learn how to explain and document why you chose an architecture for a problem. It's a habit that'll set you apart from your peers.

Thank you this is a good one. Clear writing is very important (more so in an increasingly remote world). Also clear writing reflects clear thinking and true understanding of a problem/solution. I read recently an important practice within Google (and I’m sure many other organizations) is to write design documents.
