Because they (the lenders) tie (put) their money and funds into stuff for longer time because of uncertainty (not knowing what’s going to happen next).

To avoid uncertainty lenders sell preferred longer term papers, thereby bringing down the yield of those and withdrawing money from the market which would otherwise chase other stuff, resulting in lower prices for other stuff?
