Clever is rarely a good idea. If this isn't a public it might just be totally broken instead of throttled.

If they're accurately reproducing the behavior of the Android app, Google can't change or remove that API without breaking versions of the app that people already have installed. (And a lot of Android users will hang on to old versions of apps basically forever.)
