I read over and over for years on multiple sites that EVs were far lighter than gas cars because they didn’t need an engine. Was that just marketing lies?

EVs need an (electric!) engine too, but the engine and all the mechanical stuff around it is much simpler than in an ICE car, and thus considerably lighter.

Unfortunately, the weight of the necessary battery more than compensates for that reduction.

The electric powertrains are significantly lighter and simpler than their ICE counterparts. Batteries, on the other hand, are heavy.
