It seems that many of the arguments against this system rely on believing governments (or similarly powerful groups) will strong-arm Apple and fabricate evidence.

I fail to see how this system (which I'm not a big fan of, to be clear) makes it easier if you assume governments can and will fabricate evidence. Doesn't seem you need an iPhone, smartphone, or to have owned or done anything at all in that case.
