My grandfather was a doctor in WWII and at one point traveled up through China and other places that had been heavily decimated / damaged / looted. I remember him talking about how access to a ship (even if over long distance) with a good machine shop was critical to just get locals up and running with basic metal tools for everyday use and medical uses. It reminded me of the importance of a local blacksmith and such. |
