USB Type-C, almost universally called USB-C for short

Where and by whom? In my experience it's always called "type c" for short, dropping the "USB" instead of the "type".

I've never heard it called "type c", only "usb c".
I have; it's the name of the Linux subsystem for it (for instance /sys/class/typec has information on the device's USB-C ports).

Well, literally every single person I've spoken to about it calls it either "thunderbolt" or "USB-C", or else they're boomers and call it "the round one".

Not a single person I've encountered in real life calls it "type c".
