Historically, didn't the employees speak French and the bosses English? From what I understood, there was very much a glass ceiling and discrimination, similar to what was going on here in the south. Capital wouldn't be loaned across ethnic lines for instance. That might contribute to the perception of entrepreneurs being shady: they historically were there to fleece the locals, not build and prosper. |
