Anyone who could open a port free of longshoreman unions (aka able to automate) would be a step function above what we have. That's not easy to swing politically though.

Eh. I've worked at a massively automated container terminal free from unions (not in the US). It's not any faster than your US terminals. Less people, sure, but not any faster. I think you massively overestimate the gains automation would bring you.
This is an apples to oranges comparison.

He said union-free, not automated.
