I think a lot of people on HN are "process-oriented" and "experimentation-favorable". Even though I was a cook in high school, I didn't really gain much skill until I found Alton Brown's books and then moved on to Harold McGee. Thinking about cooking as chemistry and physics transformed how I cook.
