This might work in emerging fields, but only to a very limited point. There was a great example many years ago in Baltimore often cited where many firefighters came from cities nearby to help fire a massive fire, only to find they couldn’t because their hoses didn’t fit the local hydrants- this directly led to better building codes and fire equipment compatibility standards.
The number of other mundane and important things where standards make lives better is too vast to count- this includes everything from the screws and nails in your house to the APIs your bank uses to handle your payment cards, to the fact that you can expect the food you eat is fit to consume.
