This change appears related to the CDN, Fastly. For example I see that cdn.openbsd.org (also Fastly) now has a AAAA record.

you’re kind of forced to use a redirect extension if you use old reddit. its sort of a pain in the ass.

There is an "Opt out of redesign" setting and some others that also affect the old website that are only available on https://new.reddit.com/settings.
