S3 is really expensive bandwidth if you expect to serve up tens of thousands of downloads of any considerable size. Take the average game demo which these days is measured in hundreds of megabytes to gigabytes. If 1000 download that kind of file per day it starts adding up. More importantly, how do you market your software? Many people go to download sites to browse what's available, so being listed is a form of advertising. If you don't expect a hefty bandwidth bill by offering it directly on your site, why not do both? |
