SMB filesharing over VPN has always been painfully slow at our organization. I'm assuming this would help, but transitioning our file servers to Datacenter Azure Edition is a no-go.

What other alternatives are there to speeding up SMB over WAN, besides investing in expensive proprietary WAN Acceleration devices from the likes of Exinda/Silverpeak/Riverbed/etc?

Thank you, that would work if we had more than one location, but our use-case is roadwarriors connecting from the road/home.
