Maybe it's because FF isn't configured to run with wayland? Check "window protocol" in about:support and make sure to run it with the MOZ_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 env var.

oh, sorry, I know recent versions of Ubuntu come with Wayland by default

It's actually PopOS 21.04, so pretty recent. Wayland is available if I wanted to ise it, but I remember running into other issues when tried.
