Yea, I've heard of that trap before of building and then trying to solve a problem rather than identifying the problem first and then building. We've certainly done a bit of that here. Initially the project was primarily just something fun for us to work on together and to stretch ourselves beyond what we typically get to do at our day jobs. For that it's been good and "successful". But, we have reached a point where it'd be more fun if other people beyond us actually used it. I think that's a good point that we should step back and reflect on what the problem is, who wants it solved, and how we position ourselves so people come across our project when looking for a solution.
