Pretty sure the author did it as a troll, in which case it's great, I hate it.

I thought it was neat and wasn't really bothered. Though I'm not really sure what it's supposed to depict

What comes to mind to me is a sandworm coming out of the ground, and pulling something back down underneath with it.
