Nope, it's not about rendering a single texture/vector globes, those have been done way before. One of there earliest globes renderings* im aware off, all complete with weather data in late 60s: https://twitter.com/wallacetim/status/908531916315471872 * for the sake of visual impression, 2D orthographic/stereographic projections are equivalent on-screen with proper 3d-renderings. |
