I think there are a lot of these checklists and top 10 things because they're easy to write and get a bit of traffic. In reality, 99% of people on HN already know everything in them. It's a great way to procrastinate, for the checklist writers and the readers alike.

How about we stop these checklists and all get to work on something interesting instead?

FYI, this is one of those "classic blog posts." It was originally posted in 2005 when many of his points hadn't yet been repeated to death.
Fair enough, except this comes from the founder of Twitter, so it carries a bit more weight than your average tech blogger.
It is one thing knowing what is on these lists, but another actually sticking to them.

Although you are correct in saying that most people on HN could write this post, very few will ever manage to live it.
