I thought this was the next logical step after Windows started incorporating containers - for several years you saw the two companies get closer together until suddenly they no longer seemed to be on speaking terms. Docker really missed their opportunity here.

Not sure what you mean, Docker and Microsoft collaborated closely on Windows containers and Microsoft still recommends docker desktop:

Doesn't Microsoft already make money from private (read enterprise) github docker registries/azure container registry while dockerhub is serving free stuff for them?

Enterprise registry is about access control which Microsoft knows how to do, they already have enterprices in their ecosystem, no?

Is there a non docker desktop path forward for windows containers on windows 10 machines?
