I know of a family who moved to the US within the last 12 months. Has that been a more recent change that would've prevented them leaving at all?

Australians currently have to be granted an "exemption" to leave the country [1]. Moving to a new country permanently (with proof) qualifies, but just going on a holiday does not.

Like you, I make money from travel, but difference is being stuck in AU suits me because it's where I have my contacts!

You can apply for an exemption and moving your residence would normally be permitted.
