Honestly, that's not very far out as far as conspiracies go. Zuckerberg has been asking for more direct regulation for at least a couple years [1]. Then listening to some of Frances Haugen's testimony I started to wonder if Facebook was consistently optimizing for engagement and profit because if they didn't, then some competitor eventually would. If Facebook decided to be more benevolent now, then that future competitor might go full evil and overtake Facebook

It's very Machiavellian, but by going full evil right now, Facebook might force the government to intervene and essentially prevent future competitors.
