Unless I’m misunderstanding the abstract, a key finding is that drinkers who then abstain have an increased risk of dementia. Lifelong abstainers showed no increased risk. My first thought is that it sounds more like people who made the lifestyle adjustment to quit drinking might have made that adjustment because of declining mental faculties. Whereas people who never make an adjustment (lifelong drinking OR abstaining) just don’t feel the need to change because they aren’t getting dementia. |
