At least on Firefox, the reader button allows one to read the full article if it is triggered before the pay-wall pops up on your screen.

I know someone will fix this behavior, but this trick works on quite some websites :)

Yep, neat trick. Alternatives: usually you can it through Archive.is, quickly stop loading, or do View Source.
