I'm a strong supporter for all that USB-C can offer, but making it mandatory feels like a terrible idea.

What if we did this to firewire back in the 2000s? Would all phones still be shipping with a now outdated and too large plug in 202X?

That's exactly my fear with these types of regulations. They severely limit innovation. I'd much prefer the manufacturers themselves to decide on the standard, force them to if you have to (likewise banning non compliant devices), otherwise you get something like what happened in Korea in the early 00s, when they regulated active x for online payments. That didn't age well and took a long time to change.
