I wish that manufacturer's had to announce supported software lifetime of a product, that you could compare and contrast on a general spec sheet, like energy efficiency. I also wish that device manufacturers should offer a marginal or low-cost software update service on a yearly subscription fee to ensure the longest lifespan out of a device. Particularly in the case of Sonos, I would be happy to shell out a few bucks a year to keep my older speakers up to date, maybe give us access to Airplay 2 or other standards. How many iPhone camera tricks used to sell the latest model are just computational at this point? I feel like adding a long tail support subscription would really help the economics for B2C device manufacturing while moving us away from the mentality of continuously junking our silicon. |
