Very interesting but the problem I see here is that we still have keyboards printed wit qwerty layout and this makes harder the transition. Maybe on dinamic keyboards (like phone and tablets) this will work better
It does make the transition a bit harder, but it also reinforces good habits at the same time -- you shouldn't be looking at the keyboard while you type. I also think the value added by an alternative keyboard layout to smaller screens is marginal at best, if not counterproductive, since having your fingers farther apart (e.g. not on the home row) makes typing easier.
