Truly one of the greatest, sad to see how things have changed.

Back then you got a great game and the devs just gave you all the tools to mod it how ever you wanted. It even managed its own mods to some extent, auto-downloading everything you needed when joining a server.

Today it's all about rootkit anti-cheats and controlling the game and everything surrounding it with an iron fist, as to best monetize every little aspect of the game. No mods, no custom maps, no nothing, because everything has to be catered to give the players "the best experience".
