> contribute to open source projects like OpenBSD

The idea of contributing to OpenBSD is fine, but it would be wise to make friends with those in power first (perhaps especially Theo) before expending too much time and effort on coding.

Probably the best way to be able to contribute is to follow the mailing list guidelines at https://www.openbsd.org/mail.html , including doing one's homework, and understanding that the devs have created this impressively high-quality system for themselves, give it away for free, and it isn't kind for new people to ask for changes to it when they are not willing to study or provide patches.

Probably good to have humility and a thick skin also, and they welcome $ donations to their project, but I not necessarily with strings attached or orders as to how things must be done. (I have no connection but as a user.)

One can hire help of course: https://www.openbsd.org/support.html . :)
