I thought the UK volantarily changed its measurement units (and currency counting) to metric back in the 70s to make it easier to trade with other countries. Wouldn't this change be counterproductive?

Most people educated in the last 50 years are unfamiliar with the old weights, and the older people were forced to become familiar with the metric system.

Nothing will change except a few old timers being stubborn just because they can, until they either give up due to lost business or retire due to old age.
