That’s my point, why bother with Bolt et al. when the volt has already established as a clear front runner.

The Volt isn't made any more, for one. And it's smaller (lower to the ground, at least, and less head clearance). I wasn't comfortable in the Volt, but the Bolt is great.

In any case, both of my grandfathers have been dead many years. And I assure you, the last cars they owned (which were manufactured in the 60s) are not what we want on the roads today.

The world's population is growing. Even if everyone's grandfathers had a magic car that lasted forever, what you describe wouldn't work for everyone.
Hi, my apologies, just got to your message. Implicit was my assumption that cars will be outlawed ~10 years from now, meaning we have every car that we need today. “Grandfather” was shorthand for “grandfathered in”
