I think it goes back at least as far as the wrong guy won the election in 1968. We've been on this path for a while.

Yes I think You are right, even before 1968. I believe FD Roosevelt managed to convince the press not to photograph him with crutches or in a wheelchair. There is no such thing as an honest fair and impartial press or politician.
