One could try reading a book, learning a new skill, or socializing.

I enjoy reading immensely, but even I hardly consider it to be a replacement for online gaming with your friends.

Or, if I'm being frank, a more inherently valuable form of entertainment than gaming.

That's not how it works for the majority of bored kids with raging hormones.
In functioning societies with functioning economies, it certainly does work that way.
